Well built and still light weight, December 15, 2009 By WB5PLJ (Jefferson City MO) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Osprey Mutant 38 Pack (Sports) I have been a little rough with this bag so far and it has fared no damage. I bought it as I wanted a smaller pack for when we go top-rope climbing. I am no miraculous climber or anything but we are sometimes hiking out a bit to get to bluffs. I could have just got a rope bag but this pulls double duty. this pack works well despite the fact that it is essentially frame less. there is a plastic panel to firm it up a bit but that is quite flimsy. There is also a removable tri-fold foam pad that I can't imagine using for anything but I leave it in place none the less for added rigidity. when you pack it in tight and cinch up the compression straps making it solid then it carries well on the back, the load lifters work etc...
I do like the Z pattern compression straps and the fact that they are open ended, more manufactures (and osprey, on there other packs) should do this. it proves to be very useful at times.
