The days are long past when I could dump a Salewa hammer, some pins, slings, a swami belt, a shoulder harness with 2o biners, lunch, a jacket, a chalk bag and some gorp into my nice leather-bottom North Face summit pack, pull the drawstring and strap the rope over the top, pulling the two long straps. Crampons (when calked for went on the bottom, spikes into that nice leather bottom, clip, a water bottle to one of the shoulder straps, add an ice axe, if necessary, and head off cragging.
Now we have chocks, and cams, and wired chocks, and fancy harnesses, and helmets (I only wore helmets on loose rock or when Alpine climbing, back in the day) and rope bags, and rope cloths, and belay/rap devices, and cell phones, and digital cameras, and hydration bladders...
Well, these packs carry it all. Tough as they can be! Holds two ice tools each, and two water bottle pockets, too. Padded and divided to spare your back from that Camalot #5...
